Sexual addiction now recognized as mental disorder by the WHO

Sexual addiction has been a recognized problem for a long time. In contrast to a normal, healthy sex drive, sexual addiction feels compulsory and beyond one’s control. It can negatively interfere with productivity, intimacy, and self-worth. Like other addictions, such as drug addiction or gambling, sex addiction can quickly take over and destroy one’s life.man beats sexual addiction

This past month, the The World Health Organization (WHO) has recognized “compulsive sexual behavior” as a mental disorder. This means that the term has been added to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), and has gained legitimacy as a mental health issue.

According to the ICD it is

characterized by persistent failure to control intense, repetitive sexual impulses or urges… that cause marked distress or impairment.
